Kittens! (not the kind you're thinking of)

I suppose this will be my first post - the start of a new story.

This is Sherwood Forest - a forest homestead across the Yukon river from Dawson City.  We set out on this homesteading adventure two years ago. we have five acres or forested Yukon hillside. We raise rabbits, grow a home garden and are investing in a small home orchird; trees that will provide fruit hopefully in 5-10 years time. It is a start, a carving out a life in the spirit of permaculture from what is classified as growing zone 0 by agriculture canada.  It is true that the winters are long and dark , but the summers are intense and plentiful and come Fall we are ready for the rest.

So what is happening in Sherwood forest now: Rabbit kittens! These were born wednesday night, pictured here Thursday morning just a couple hours old. This is Nutmeg's (mama's) first litter - she had 7 total: not bad.

We have 2 more pregnant females - more on that later.

Spring is always a magical time, and when it involved new animal life - right in the palm of your hand it is so special.

Up here at 64 latitude it will be a while before we see all that new plant life starting to bloom and blossom.  But, rabbit kittens, indoor sprouts and of course the racing daylight are all promising signs of what lays ahead.
